Our cattle herd has always been the backbone of the Bonham Ranch. In the past, the cattle’s primary purpose was to provide income for the ranch. Today, cows not only produce cash flow for the ranch, but they are also a key tool used for manipulation and improvement of the rangeland they call home. One of the Bonham Foundation’s core goals is to show that livestock and wildlife can not only complement each other, but thrive together through thoughtful stewardship.

The Bonham Ranch cow herd traces its roots back more than 75 years to E.M. Holt, who began breeding registered Angus cattle with the purchase of a show heifer in 1950. Today, we continue his legacy and strive to raise well-adapted, commercially demanded cattle with longevity and quality appearance. Our cattle are selected for structural correctness to include sound feet and functional udders. Angus cattle are well-known for their docile temperament and we believe that our cattle are some of the most gentle around. Being located in south-central Texas, between Weimar and Columbus, the weather is often hot and humid. We select for cattle that are slick-hided and shed their winter coats before the temperatures rise. Early hair shedding directly relates to heat tolerance and indicates proper hormone balance and function.
Our cowherd is expected to become pregnant, raise and wean an acceptable calf every year. Any female that fails to meet those standards is culled from the herd. Our cows are only exposed to the bull for 65 days in the winter in order to calve in the fall of the year. This allows us to provide our predominantly spring calving commercial bull customers with 18-month-old bulls ready for sale in the spring of each year. We incorporate artificial insemination (AI) in a portion of our herd each year to introduce valuable outcross genetics. Bulls used in our AI program are carefully selected for proven performance and ability to complement our breeding goals.

Each spring, we offer a limited number of 18-month-old registered Angus bulls for sale by private treaty. After weaning, our bulls are raised in rugged pastures along Harvey Creek, where the challenging terrain helps develop athleticism and structural integrity. They’re hand-fed a developer ration designed to support optimal genetic growth. Every bull offered for sale will have already been culled for issues related to structure, feet, or temperament. Prior to sale, all bulls are thoroughly evaluated by our veterinarian and must pass a breeding soundness exam. They are also up to date on vaccinations and deworming.

We occasionally offer Angus replacement females as well, most commonly in late spring after pregnancy checks are completed.
